Dean Hamilton Gipple, 92, of Columbus Junction died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at Colonial Manor Home in Columbus Junction.
Born Sept. 7, 1917, on the family farm in Pitch in Louisa County, he was the son of Frank and Francine Gipple. On Nov. 24, 1938, he married Ruth Lois Williams.
Mr. Gipple farmed and sold insurance for Farm Bureau, retiring in 1987. He graduated from Wyman High School. He served as a 4-H leader, school board member and was active in the Spring Run Church. He was a founding member of the State Association for the Preservation of Iowa Cemeteries, helped pass the law to protect pioneer cemeteries and helped restore them. He enjoyed woodworking, photography, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include one brother, Ray of Florissant, Mo.; two sons, Danny Gipple and Melvin "Red" Gipple; three daughters, Susie Stoutner, Nancy Thorkildson and Alice Redalen; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and two brothers.
The memorial service for Mr. Gipple will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church in Columbus Junction where the family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m.
Memorials have been established for Spring Run United Methodist Church and United Presbyterian Home of Washington.
