Sequoia Drive fills Central Park with sound

MOUNT PLEASANT - Rock Around the Block wraps up its season with a final concert Friday by Sequoia Drive.

"It's hard to pigeon-hole them," said Krista Watts, tourism and administrative coordinator with the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce, about the band. "They play country, alternative, alternative rock. People really enjoy them."

The band, based in Macomb, Ill., headlined the SnowBull after-party in Burlington earlier this year.

The free event is from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday in Mount Pleasant's Central Park. Cold beverages will be available, and Pizza Ranch will be serving chicken, pizza and cactus bread, which is a dessert pizza.

"This season has been an excellent year," Watts said. "Our best ever. Attendance has been up at all the events. We've had some really good bands, and the community is really enjoying it."

Watts said people bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on, kids run around the park getting their faces painted for free or gathering free balloons, and every now and again they might splash in the fountain.

The odds of that happening this weekend are more likely, with temperatures expected to be near 87.

"We've been very fortunate," Watts said. "The dates have landed on fairly cool days. That will probably change this week, but we hope it won't affect the turnout."

The final concert is sponsored by Arbor Court and Mount Pleasant Glass.
