A legend

Burlington High School and the city of Burlington lost a legend the other day at the passing of Richard "Dick" Wagner. I submit that a way to honor all that Mr. Wagner stood for and exemplified both in the classroom and in athletics for the Grayhounds is for the teams of Burlington High School to wear the letters RLW on their uniforms for the upcoming school year from the advent of the fall sports until the end of next summer's sports.

Mr. Wagner stood for excellence, pride in doing one's best in the classroom and on the athletic field/court. He expected nothing less than the best effort and was a no-nonsense teacher, as I had him for one semester of bookkeeping. His standard of discipline is known best by those that had the privilege of being coached by him.

He was one of the greatest figures in the annals of Burlington High School, along with Harold Tackelson, LeRoy Pease, Carl Johanson and Jim Hoffman. Mr. Wagner's legacy will live on when teams from BHS compete each time as the years pass by.

I hope Mr. Wagner will be honored with his initials on the sports teams for BHS this coming school year.
