KEOKUK - A welfare check about a toddler resulted in the discovery of a suspected meth lab Monday and the arrest of three local residents.
Chyanne Nicole Rhoer, 21, and Jeffery Charles Korshgen, 29, who both live in the Sandusky Trailer Park in the 2700 block of 340th Street, were arrested in connection with the incident.
Jeffrey Wayne Sirtak, 21, of Keokuk, later turned himself in. He is charged in an initial complaint with conspiracy to manufacture more than five grams of meth, manufacture of more than five grams of meth in the presence of a minor and child endangerment. If convicted on all the charges, he faces up to 57 years in prison.
Korshgen faces the same charges in addition to maintaining a drug house.
Rhoer is charged with conspiracy to manufacture more than five grams of meth, child endangerment and maintaining a drug house.
Authorities with the Department of Human Services and Lee County Sheriff's Office were sent to the mobile home park to check on the welfare of a 2-year-old. While inside Korshgen's and Rhoer's home, a sheriff's deputy smelled a chemical odor recognized as meth.
The identity of the child was not disclosed.
Authorities found evidence of what they believe to be an active meth lab inside the trailer as well as several items they say were indicative of a clandestine drug lab.
Korshgen and Sirtak left the residence while Rhoer remained on the scene during the welfare check, narcotics agents said.
