Wonderful performance

As a representative of the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra, I want to thank all who came to the symphony's "Summer Blast."

The weatherman gave us a wonderful evening, and the bugs stayed away. I think all who attended, close to 4,000 by my estimation, would agree the symphony was superb and J & M fireworks display exhilarating.

This is an event for the community, and it takes the support of the community in many forms to put it together. Without the help of volunteers, financial help from the sponsors, and the support and cooperation of the City of Burlington, it would be impossible to enjoy an event such as this.

I would like to thank the city and parks workers who did the heavy work preparing the area for the concert. And a special thank-you to Tom Walz, for his continued support year in and year out. His familiarity with city workings was most helpful this year when we needed the electricity turned on. The Burlington Fire Department was available and ready in case of an emergency, and the Burlington Police Department's presence helped effiently and safely move traffic.

I also thank the financial sponsors. Major sponsors are The John H. Witte Jr. Foundation and The Starker Trust, City of Burlington who provide a large portion of the financial support. This support is augmented by the generous help from The Hawk Eye, KBUR and Craftsman Press. Due to a corporate policy change, we lost the support of one of our traditional sponsors. This support was replaced by many of our local banks, MidwestOne Bank, F & M Bank & Trust, Two Rivers Bank & Trust, First Federal Savings, US Bank, Danville State Savings Bank, Lee County Bank & Trust, Farmers Savings Bank and Mediapolis Savings Bank. I realize this was a last-minute, unexpected expense for them and appreciate their support.

Last but not least, thank you to all who attended the concert and made generous donations to the "bucket brigade."

Thanks to all who volunteer. Your time, thoughts and energy in the planning, financing, preparation and implementation of this event make it happen. Your dedication and support is needed and most appreciated.

Finally, to the orchestra musicians and conductor Robert McConnell, without whom there would be no concert, thank you. The many hours you spend studying and practicing were very apparent in your wonderful performance.

Thank you all.
