FORT MADISON -- A home was destroyed by a fire here Sunday night, fire department officials said Monday.

Crews responded to the home at 2802 Avenue O at approximately 10:51 p.m. Upon arrival, they found heavy fire showing on the south side of the home.

Authorities said the fire started in the back porch, but the cause is still unknown.

The home, owned by Frank and Janet Lawler, was a total loss. Fire officials estimated the loss at $70,000.

One firefighter suffered an injury to his knee.
