The recent decision of Dr. Leland Morrison was a surprise to me. However, it does provide an opportunity to the school board. We have an excellent replacement already on board. This individual has earned her due. She understands the present difficulties we are experiencing, and has the wherewithal to come up with reasonable solutions. Of course, I am talking about our present assistant superintendent, Jane Evans. She is an excellent administrator and is well known and liked by all who work with her.
Under normal circumstances, the board would hire a professional search team to replace Morrison. But these are not times of "normal circumstances."
First, it would cost $50,000 to $100,000 to hire a search team, money we do not have.
Second, we have the best candidate already working for us.
Now, I am not sure what the board has to do to hire a replacement, but a lengthy search is not necessary. I would think just placing ads in a few newspapers would be enough. And at the end, I would hope the board does not just what is obvious, but what is best for the students, parents, teachers and citizens of Burlington and appoint Jane as our next superintendent.
If that happens, I would suggest we not replace Jane's present position, thus helping our present economic situation. Come on, board. I have said you need to step up to the plate more during these difficult times. Here's one opportunity to show everybody that you're ready.
